First week in Texas.. March 25, 2019

Transfer #1- Serving in San Antonio 9th ward and Balcones B (Branch B Spanish ward)

This week was absolutely insane!! So much happened that I hope I will be able to share it all, but we will see! First of all I love everybody and want to say thank you for all that you are all doing for me, sending me and keeping me happy!

Since last preparation day, we just enjoyed our last couple days in the MTC being a family and making memories! Half of our district left Monday morning, so all of the San Antonio missionaries in our district had to go two days at the MTC without half of our family and that was actually super sad, but we made it! We took all day on Tuesday to pack our room and make sure we could work everything out, and we did it! HUGE THANKS TO HERMANA CARLSON! She honestly saved me haha. She also saved me when we got to the field, but that'll come in a bit! So Wednesday we woke up at 4:30 and got ready and went to the airport! We arrived in Texas around 12, picked up the missionaries coming from Provo (in our group, there was 23 missionaries total, which is a TON) and then we went straight to the Alamo to do some street contacting! It was the weirdest thing to do everything in English! Then we had a lot of initiation classes, we got a good Texas bbq, and then got to go walk around the San Antonio temple grounds until it started pouring rain, then we left! We went to the Sister Training Leaders house and when we got there I had realized that in my overnight bag (which we needed because our big bags were locked up for the night) I had forgot an extra dress for the next day, so this is where Hermana Carlson steps up and is seriously the best friend ever. She let me borrow her dress for the next day! I was sure blessed with her!

Thursday we woke up, went to more initiation and then met our new companions and found out our first area! My mom/trainer/companion is Hermana Schellenberg, and she's from Utah as well! She is seriously awesome! We get along so well and she is just such a cute person, I am loving the time with her! I most likely have the same trainer for 2 months so I am extremely excited for our time together! We are serving in he 9th Ward/Balcones B, so we are in an english and spanish ward which is weird but also so fun! Thursday we got right to work after I met her! We went home (which isn't home anymore because we just started moving into an apartment with another companionship today) and unpacked a little, learned a little about our area, and then went and taught a lesson! It was actually really cool! Her name is Caitlin and she is about 17, a junior and she loves sports! She has been reading the Book of Mormon that her friend gave her, so she is so ready to hear our messages! The Lord has really been preparing people here! Then we passed by people that night, and met some awesome people!

Friday we had a somewhat regular day! We had some study, and then moved in more (which I shouldn't have, but at the time I didn't know whether we'd be moving or not) and then we went out to talk to people and teach some more lessons! We are finding lots of people and Hermana Schellenberg always says I'm her lucky charm because so many people are wanting to talk to us! We offered to help this older lady with her garbage and she ended up inviting us into her house, and we talked for about 40 minutes and then found out she's a Jehovah's witness, so that was crazy haha.

Saturday I had my first spanish lesson, and it was absolutely crazy haha my spanish is nowhere where I thought it was, but I am studying diligently every day and I am definitely working to get there. It's kind of hard though because I can understand actually pretty well, I just have a harder time speaking it, so in this particular lesson this man was kind of talking rude about how I haven't said anything and just asking my companion if I knew anything, and like I understand almost everything but can't exactly conjugate right or say what I am always trying to say, so my companion had to explain it was my second day and that I am still learning.

Sunday was crazy too haha I feel like all of the days here are crazy. We had our english sacrament at 9 am, and then spanish at 12 pm. Then we went tracting, and found a family of 3 who all accepted their own Book of Mormon, and then we also handed one more out that night! The work here is honestly crazy and I'm loving it!

Today has been pretty scattered! We woke up and went to Costco with a member this morning, then we went to get groceries at HEB and then to Target! We went back home and have spent most of the day packing up the house and getting ready to move into the other apartment by tomorrow! We are doing this right now because our lease is up around May and it's just a good time to do this!

I am so sorry this is so long, I didn't even put in much of what has happened so if you want to know, just talk to my family haha I don't have much more time today, but I just want to say that I am doing so good and that I am loving Texas already! I love you all and am forever thankful for my friends and family for supporting and loving me!
Until next week,
Hermana Griffin

Week 5...

ÚLTIMA SEMANA EN EL CCM! I can't believe my time in the CCM is almost over, but I am so so so excited to go to Texas on Wednesday!

We had two devotionals this week like usual! The one on Sunday was special because we had the person that is in charge of all the international MTC's speak to us, and that was cool! The one on Tuesday was special as well because our whole district sang in the devotional! We sang the EFY medly that is on my blog a couple weeks ago, but half in Spanish and half in English! Everyone at home knows I don't sing unless it's country music, but y'all best believe I got up there in front of the whole CCM and sang haha! It actually went really well! We were all super nervous but everyone said we sounded amazing so that's a good thing! An hermana that we didn't know came up to us yesterday and told us she recorded it, and then sent it to us! It was so awesome!

Tuesday was such a stressful day... we woke up in the morning and were going to try and practice our song, but couldn't find the elders and had to be dressed and at the reception office by 7:45 for information about leaving next week, so we just stopped trying to find the elders and went back home. Then we went to the meeting, and I got told we have to pay for both our bags, and that our carry on could not weigh more than 22 lbs, so that definitely threw a curve in my plans because we literally received 15 lbs of Spanish books, and my carry on was already 40 lbs when I came... soooooo we had to stay up for so many hours Tuesday night and pack because we had to weigh our bags before Thursday.. but don't worry, I have figured things out by now and now I'm just living out of my suitcases for a week! Also on Tuesday, our district got the opportunity to welcome new missionaries and it was so fun being able to be the old missionaries this time and help the fresh meat with any questions! So yeah, Tuesday was a long and very busy day!

Remember a couple weeks ago when I said all I wanted was some Andes mints, ice and coke?? Well, I have yet to find any more mints, but last week Elder Cluff pulled some strings and got ice for Hermana Carlson and I, and this week WE FOUND COKE. Funny story! So on Saturday, Hermana Towery (also going to San Antonio) and Elder Ahlstrom (New Jersey) broke two of our coat hangers in our room, so Monday one of the workers from the CCM came into our room to fix them, and he started talking to us and asked us if we liked coke, and he told us THERE IS SOME IN THE CCM. Apparently the room next to where we do the laundry on service days has coke in the vending machine, and he told us we could buy some after 6 because that's when the workers go home. HERMANA CARLSON AND I WENT AS QUICK AS WE COULD. Now the only stuff I want is some good BWW and Andes Mints haha.

Wednesday Hermana Carlson had our first "fight" or whatever you would call it haha so it just didn't start a great day for me because I had to weigh my bags in the morning and they were over weight, so from then on I was super stressed and Hermana Carlson has been having a rough time with another hermana in our district, and she's just been taking it out on me but I kind of got sick of it, so anyways most of the day we didn't talk very much, and after dinner she was super upset about something but wouldn't talk about it so that upset me even more than I was from everything else that day, so I told her we needed a companionship inventory and we did our second one for the whole six weeks we've been here (oops) BUT we are all better haha I think it was just a stressful day for the both of us, but it's all good now! I'm not sure if I put this in my last email home, but last Friday on pday, Elder Ahlstrom was bouncing a soccer ball like a basketball and I stuck my foot right under where it would bounce (not thinking it would do much) and it shot straight off my foot and nailed Hermana Carlson in the face... it was super hard and I felt soooooo bad, but now she holds it against me kind of as a joke haha so once she joked about that again, I knew we were good again haha.

Yesterday we had so many fun activities and teaching opportunities! We went and did service at the laundry room again and it wasnt as fun this time because the elders weren't there because they took them to make beds in other houses, and it's so sad because they are working so hard to separate the girls from the boys :( We taught Angela for the last time also (:/) but it went really well! We also had TRC and we got to teach 2 times even though we were only planning on one! We taught an older couple from Mexico over Skype and it was seriously so fun! Then we got to teach our teachers brother! Hermana Vargas is honestly the best and her brother was so funny too!! He told us our Spanish is so good and that we are ready for the field so that was cool!

Today we don't have much planned other than emailing family, playing volleyball and probably taking pictures with lots of people!

Mi pensamiento espiritual este semana es 3 Nefi 13:8 y dice, "Be not ye therefore like unto them, for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of before ye ask him." I love this scripture because it gives me hope and peace whenever I am having a hard time because I know that God has a plan and knows exactly what I need in the moment, and I know he truly watches out for his missionaries and I have felt his love for me so much more this past month and almost a half than I ever have!

I love you all! I am doing great and am so excited to go to Texas!! Thank you for all the emails full of love and support! Next time I'll be in Texas, so until then!!

Much love,
♡ Hermana Griffin ♡

Week 4 at the MTC...

Hola todos!!! Como están?? Yo estoy muy feliz y emocionada ir a Texas en 12 dias!!!

I ALSO HIT ONE MONTH THIS WEEK AND THAT WAS CRAZY!! Time has flown, but also crawled by at the same time! This means next week is my last week in the CCM, and as excited as I am to go to Texas, I am not excited at all to say goodbye to my district. We have become so close and saying goodbye to them is going to be so heartbreaking..

This week was great! Since we started our 5th week, we have little stickers on our name tags, and its because week 5 and 6 are supposed to be as much Spanish as possible, and so our district is doing a game that we start every day with 4 lives, and when someone talks English and someone hears them and calls them out, they give one of their lives to them! It's been a fun game and has really helped my Spanish! It has brought a little contention to our district because people are really protective of their lives! My Spanish is getting so much better and I can have conversations and teach the first three lessons in Spanish!

We said goodbye to our amazing sister training leaders that we had the opportunity to have the first 4 weeks of the CCM, and that was super sad and it's honestly so weird to not see them around anymore! It's going to be just like leaving home again and I'm not excited to do that again, but it'll be okay!

My companion and I have been teaching "Elaine" and "Angela" and have them both agreed to being baptized! At the beginning we were always super nervous for every lesson and trying to write out our whole script before we go in to teach, but lately we literally just talk about what we want to talk about, and don't plan very much and go in hoping the Spirit will help guide us where we need to go, and He always does!

We had another awesome devotional this Tuesday and it was amazing! My spiritual thoughts this week are quotes that stuck with me from the devotional, the first one is "Because of Him" and it literally applies to everything that we do! Because of Christ we get the opportunity to have our wonderful lives, to make choices and to be able to repent and change our lives. The second quote is one that hit me hard when I heard it because I have been stressed my Spanish won't be good enough by the time I get to the field, and it is the quote I will keep with me on my whole mission, and is "I never called you to master the language, I simply called you to serve with all your heart, might, mind and strength." I loved it so much that I took so many hours to draw the little paper that I will attach!

Yesterday we had a service activity and it was the best thing I've done here at the CCM! We did laundry, and I know mom will be surprised by this because every time I had to do laundry at home I would complain, but I was SO EXCITED for laundry because I've heard it's so fun and it seriously was! I had the best job of everyone, which was when an hermana didn't have a sheet to fold, she'd raise her hand and I'd throw another one to her to fold, it was the best!! Then the man that was over laundry turned on some music and I'm not going to lie, I was SO EXCITED. HE TURNED ON "GOD'S PLAN" BY DRAKE and everyone got so pumped hahah, at the CCM, any music that isn't "church music" people call heathen music, but everybody got so excited and I think 5 weeks without my music has been hard but I didn't realize how much I missed music until that song turned on! Then the next song was one by Enrique Iglesias and it was seriously just a party! After we put all the sheets in bags we got to throw them at the elders and pretty much play dodgeball and it was seriously the most fun ever!!

I'm sorry these are all so long!! But thank you to everybody that reads these and also to everyone who emails me!! I love and miss you all, and CAN'T WAIT TO BE A TEXAN SOON!!

Love Hermana Griffin ♡

Week 3... March 1, 2019

This week has just been an absolute roller coaster!! I pretty much feel like I've done nothing and accomplished nothing because I've been stuck in my room all week! Monday my companion was sick so I had to sit in our casa all day but I couldn't sleep or anything because that's not allowed, Tuesday we both barely made it through the day of class and our devotional, Wednesday I was told to stay in bed because I strained a muscle in my chest from playing volleyball too much and it hurts to breathe, so I literally slept for like 5 hours that day, Thursday was crazy day full of classes and teaching, and today we got to go to the temple again!! So literally a roller coaster, but it's been great!

I had to talk in church this Sunday and that was alright hahah everyone told me my Spanish sounds amazing so that was cool I guess! I really wasn't expecting to have it be me, but they called my name and I swear I was as red as a tomato but oh well!

Tuesday we had a devotional and got to listen to D. Todd Christofferson bring broadcast from Provo and that was pretty sweet! He talked to us a lot about being ready to be the mouthpieces of Heavenly Father and I have never felt so ready or excited in my life! The elders in our district also sang during the devotional so that was cool! We might sing the song that our district always sings in the devotional the last week we are here so that would be fun!

Wednesday we did an English fast, and it was rough haha but like I said I was in my room most the day on Wednesday sleeping so it actually wasn't too bad for me! My comp and I did have to wake up at 6:30 and go outside our house to meet the elders to start our English fast together, so we literally rolled out of bed, I wrapped myself in a blanket, walked outside to listen to a scripture from one of our elders and then another elder said the prayer to start our fast, and then walked back into our room and went back to bed. I got up an hour later though and went to the enfermeria and received a blessing from our elders, and that's when the doctor told me I strained a muscle in my chest and can't play volleyball for the next week so that's sad :( but my chest isn't hurting as bad today so its totally getting better!

My companion and I are so much alike it's pretty scary! We found our new favorite thing to do during companionship study (because it's at 8 pm) which is going star gazing, it's so much fun and we just talk about life and just everything going on and it's so awesome, we are seriously best friends and I love it.

I just want to give a quick shout out to all of my friends who are thinking about serving a mission! I promise you it's the best decision you could ever make for yourself and will bless you for the rest of your life! I love it and coming closer to Heavenly Father and my Savior, Jesus Christ is the absolute best feeling in the world! My scripture is for you guys, it's D&C 80:3-5. I promise you that if you follow the promptings of the Holy Ghost, you can all be missionaries in your own way. You don't have to be wearing a nametag to be a missionary, as I have come to learn from all of you at home who blessed my life in more ways than you could know.

I love you all so much!! Thank you for the constant love and support!! I will be hitting my 1 month mark next week and it's so crazy how fast it's gone but I have loved it!! I get to go to Texas in less than three weeks and I could not be more excited for 3 THINGS- ICE, COKE & ANDES MINTS (I'm dying here) pero está bien!!

Stay happy & have a great week y'all!

Love Hermana Griffin
